I had an interesting moment at the gym today that made me think about how we approach opportunity.

As I walked through the crowded parking lot, a woman slowly followed behind me in her car, clearly hoping for a parking space. Eventually, I reached my car, and she paused for a moment as if considering it:but then quickly sped off. My spot was “too far” from the entrance.

Here’s the part that made me smile.

I got in my car, took a moment to check my phone, and then drove off a couple of minutes later. She was still circling the lot, looking for a spot closer to the door.

If she’d taken the “too far” spot, she would’ve already been inside the gym, doing what she came to do. Instead, she spent her time chasing the illusion of convenience and avoided just a little bit of extra effort.

It made me realize how often this same mindset applies in business, investing, and even franchising. Real opportunities almost always require a little bit of extra work or stepping a little outside your comfort zone.

The people who succeed aren’t necessarily the ones who find the perfect, effortless opportunity. They’re the ones who are willing to walk a few extra steps when others circle the lot waiting for something easier that never comes to fruition.
