I was on a call last week with a large investment group exploring which franchise vertical might offer the strongest return over the next decade.
They were interested in a concept that had grown quickly in recent years. On the surface, it looked like a success story with rapid expansion, strong consumer buzz, and momentum in the marketplace.
But when we dug deeper, the story started to unravel. Average unit volumes had begun to decline. New unit openings were slowing. Franchisees were starting to feel the pressure and in many cases were selling their businesses at a loss.
This is the trap of the flash in the pan franchise. Every few years a new shiny category takes the spotlight. They grow fast, attract capital, and then plateau just as quickly.
At first, demand looks endless. But once consumers try the product or service, many realize they can replicate it at home, substitute it with something cheaper, or simply lose interest. What felt like a blue ocean suddenly becomes overfished, crowded by both franchised brands and independents.
The result? More franchisees are left fighting over the same shrinking pool of customers. Which brings me to the analogy I shared on the call:
The ice cube may look large in the beginning, but every lick makes it smaller. Meanwhile, companies keep selling new franchises while the existing franchisees have declining AUVs, which means more people are licking from an ever-smaller ice cube.
A franchise agreement typically runs 10 years. A commercial lease often matches the same term. If you commit to a flashy category that loses relevance in 2 or 3 years, you are stuck paying for the next decade.
Sustainability matters more than speed. Categories that solve problems people cannot or will not solve themselves stand the test of time. Businesses built on convenience, necessity, and defensible economics usually outlast the fads.
The best franchise investments are not about being trendy. They are about finding brands that balance strong consumer demand, consistent unit-level profitability, and long-term staying power.
Because when you are in franchising, the last thing you want is to spend the next decade chasing after a melting ice cube.
Set a call to see if investing in a solid franchise concept is for you!
